  • At 1080i, however, a pixel-phase test pattern (one pixel on/one pixel off) was severely rolled off—almost non-existent, in fact. A similar pattern at 1080p/60 was much better, though still a bit lower in amplitude at the highest frequency. As a resu...

  • Abstract:  Regular readers will recall that we tested - and were very impressed by - the first Sony projector to use the brand's new SXRD technology. In fact, only a couple of things stopped us from giving the VPL-VW100 a rave review and that was its north-of-£5,000...

  • Abstract:  The performance increase of home video products over the past three years, paired with precipitous price drops, is nothing short of unprecedented. 50-inch HDTVs that only a few years ago cost $20,000 today cost less than $2,000. Never before have we se...

  • Abstract:  The Sony produces (once properly adjusted - more on that later) an excellent overall image, and at its best, some of the best black levels I have seen to date (it relies on a dynamic iris, so contrast varies with the scene). The image itself is ver...

  • Relatively inexpensive for a 1080p projector; solid color decoding; reasonably bright; resolves every detail of 1080 resolution sources; highly adjustable picture; plenty of connectivity.
  • Less than perfect gamma, poor primary and secondary color accuracy.
  • Although the Sony VPL-VW50s picture quality falls short in a number of areas, its easily one of the best values in 1080p front projection.

  • Abstract:  The gauntlet has been thrown down, the line drawn in the sand, and there is no turning back. The Sony Pearl is all that and more and I’m here to say to the competition, you’ve been warned. While I like Sony’s code name of choice (Pearl)...

  • Abstract:  At Septembers CEDIA convention in Denver, the Sony VPL-VW50 1080p SXRD front projector generated some serious excitement. It wasnt just that Sony had unveiled a new three-chip 1080p model (there were others); it was because the VPL-VW50 (codename: P...

  • Abstract:  Sony made a big splash at the CEDIA trade show in September with the announcement of the Sony VPL-VW50. This is Sonys newest 1080p resolution projector featuring their proprietary SXRD technology. The biggest draw was the price tag--a mere $4,999, which m...
