  • The Samsung Portable SSD X5 is the fastest Thunderbolt 3 drive that we have had the pleasure of reviewing to date and its performance is most impressive. The X5 1TB drive that we reviewed today is rated at up to 2800 MB/s read and 2300 MB/s write and we w...

  • Best performing portable SSD tested to date (by a large margin), Solid construction. Attractive design
  • Physical size seems a bit larger than needed, Thermal design limits cooling for longer transfers (>5 minutes at >1GB/s), Can only be used in Thunderbolt 3 capable systems (no USB 3.1 compatibility)
  • Samsung certainly did not disappoint with their new Portable SSD X5. The performance was outstanding, far exceeding that of any competing portable SSD tested to date. That said, there are a few things to be picky about. The design, while sleek, is a bit o...

  • The X5 blew all of our other contenders clean out of the water. There is no doubt that it will land far ahead of the other portables in our rankings. We distill an overall performance rating using an older SATA SSD as a baseline. To compare each drive, w...

  • Thunderbolt 3 interface, Sequential read and write performance, Full hardware-based encryption,
  • Expensive, Drive gets hot under load, Lack of color options, Three-year warranty, Non-slip coating isn't very effective
  • The Samsung Portable SSD X5 is rather pricey, but the impressive performance will speed up your workflow. Full AES 256-bit hardware-based encryption provides a nice layer of additional security for the professional crowd, but the three-year warranty i...

  • Blazingly fast, Portable
  • Lack of AC jack makes it Thunderbolt 3 only, Expensive, though not out of whack for NVMe SSDs
  • If you want the fastest possible portable storage for your Thunderbolt 3 Mac, the X5 is it. The biggest issues are price and a complete the lack of compatibility with the vast majority of Macs and PCs. If that's a major concern, go USB 3.1.But USB...

  • The 'Dynamic Thermal Guard' technology adopted by Samsung appeared interesting from the marketing description (automatic throttling to keep the case temperature below 45C). In order to figure out the impacts, I deleted the volume on the X5, and set up a f...

  • Incredible speeds, Compact form-factor
  • High price, Not everyone really needs this much speed
  • While the X5 is that much faster than the T5, you really have to be involved in an industry or hobby where that extra speed matters for it to really be worth the premium price...
