  • Excellent high ISO performance, great for shooting in dark environments, good burst mode, Full HD video recording
  • Slow focusing at times, inaccurate focussing at times
  • Canon's EOS 550D digital SLR is aimed at users new to the SLR scene, but it's a very capable camera for all types of shooting scenarios. It excels in dark conditions, it's great for portraits, and it can even be used for sporting and action shots. The Ful...

  • High ISO image quality is very good. We shot in an almost dark room at ISO 6400 without any high hopes and found the image perfectly acceptable. Noise reduction is not too aggressive and the high pixel density doesn’t seem to have increased image no...
  • We found a noticeable difference in image quality between jpeg and RAW files. This is not something to dislike, but it is a warning that it is worth the trouble of shooting RAW. The included RAW converter is excellent.
  • The EOS 550D is an excellent way into the Canon system. It doesn’t have the luxurious feel of the 7D, but then it costs $1300 less for the body. Our test unit came with the Canon 18–135mm lens which is not good enough for the camera. We would...

  • Full manual control in movie mode , Increased ISO sensitivity , Excellent LCD screen and resolution , External mic input
  • No selectable RAW sizes , Small viewfinder
  • The Canon 550D has the best implementation of video on a digital SLR yet, and matches it with excellent still image quality....

  • High grade, semi professional specification in a manageable consumer level camera chassis, best-in-class 18MP stills resolution and 1920x1080 Full HD movies, compatible with a wide range of additional lenses
  • Plastic-y build compared with true semi pro models, requires period of familiarity
  • For those aspiring pros who want a capable multimedia tool that still resembles a conventional DSLR, the Canon EOS 550D should come near the top of your list as a safe option. If you don't already own a set of lenses, laying out almost £900 for your first...
