TestSeek's Expert Reviews Summary

AMD 6970 has come to the world to figh the NVIDIA GTX 570 and it succeeds quite well in this task. However the new AMD 6970 graphics card doesn't quite reach up to the absolute top performers. This may however change with new drivers coming out in the future. What the editors like is the relative low power consumption and the lower-than-usual noise levels (except for when in high load). Another positive feature is the possibility to connect multiple cards (more than two) via CrossFire. That one can easily revert to the standard frequencies is also good so that potential problems with overclocked cards can be easiliy fixed.

The editors liked

  • 2GB Memory
  • Cooling features
  • Strong performance/watt

The editors didn't like

  • Noisy at higher performance levels
  • Overclocking doesn't mean real world benefits
  • Expensive

TestSeek's Conclusion

The AMD HD 6970 card brings many new cool things to the table; mainly its power tuning technology. The performance is very high although not yet as good as the top performing graphics cards but this may be due to the early drivers which was used in the tests.

  • A bit faster than Nvidia's closest card on bench tests, newer games, Better multi-screen support than competing Nvidia cards
  • Lags behind GeForce GTX 570 in older games and tests, Loud fan under full load, Too long for some PC cases
  • The HD 6970 is eclipsed by Nvidia’s high-end GTX 580 in raw performance, but at about $370 at launch, it's a better bet for cutting-edge games than Nvidia’s similarly priced GeForce GTX 570. ...

  • The HD 6970 is a good card and in single form it's a good setup already. In Crossfire you've got two good cards that create a great setup, and that's because AMD has done such a fantastic job when it comes to Crossfire. Sure, the HD 6870 in Crossfi...

  • Good 3D gaming performance, DirectX 11 compatibility, Eyefinity, HDMI 1.4, bitstream audio HD
  • We were expecting higher performance, You can hear the fan in 2D as well as 3D, Energy consumption up, Stereoscopic 3D gaming is complex to put into place
  • Our rating is calculated according to the results we obtained in our tests. In practice, we are disappointed with this model, which really brings very little in comparison to the previous generation. The additional 10% you get in gaming is no recompens...

  • A great improvement over the HD 5870, Decent under-the-hood enhancements
  • Struggles against Nvidia competition, Quite pricey at launch
  • Given that we've already seen this sort of performance in a sub-£300 card the HD 6970 loses much of its shine...
