  • Like: The image quality from the EP trio is superb. Colours are rich without being oversaturated. Skin tones are smooth yet detailed. Auto focusing and exposure are good with exposure compensation easily to hand. Movie mode is exceptionally fine.
  • Dislike: The price now seems high, compared with the excellent Samsung NX10

  • Fun art modes, good focusing, focus tracking, sharp overall image quality, built-in flash
  • Noticeable noise above ISO 400, mode dial is too stiff, no dedicated controls for changing exposure, no built-in EVF, screen a little dull
  • The Olympus PEN E-PL1 is a budget interchangeable lens camera, but the problem is that it's just not cheap enough. You don't get an EVF nor any physical exposure controls, and the body is just very plain overall. It doesn't have the appeal of the PEN E-P2...

  • Pop-up flash. Excellent SLR image quality for the price. Good noise control. HD video recording
  • Slow autofocus. Small, low-resolution LCD
  • The E-PL1 isn't fast enough to accurately capture moving subjects, but as a cheap entry into the Micro Four Thirds format it's a pretty good camera indeed....

  • Abstract:  The Olympus Pen E-PL1 is a third-generation model in a series of cameras pioneered by Olympus with the aim of providing small, interchangeable-lens cameras with sensors significantly larger than those in digicams. While offering the same 12.3-megapixel...

  • Abstract:  Best DSLR and System Camera Just over a year ago I reviewed the Pen E-P1 , Olympus's first foray into the compact system camera market. The review was generally positive, but I criticised the camera's lack of a built-in flash and relatively high price com...

  • With the E-P1 and E-P2 Olympus was targeting the enthusiasts and the serious photographers who were looking for a lighter and smaller alternative to a DSLR. The E-PL1 reflects a market shift by Olympus as it is aimed at the beginner and the compact o...

  • The first PEN to incorporate a flash and the cheapest Micro Four Thirds camera to date; simplified operation; fun digital Art Filters and effects
  • Plastic construction; pared-down ISO, smaller LCD screen at 2.7in

  • Impressive design and handling; excellent image quality; smashing video-recording features
  • Buttons feel rather cheap; shonky contracting-lens mechanism
  • The Olympus Pen E-PL1 is cheaper and more plasticky than the Pen E-P1 and Pen E-P2, and ought to be worse -- but it's not. It handles better and does more, thanks to its built-in flash. It's a Micro Four Thirds camera for the masses, and about time to...

  • Abstract:  Boasting compact camera-like dimensions, but using a much larger micro Four Thirds format (17.3 x 13mm) Lmos sensor, the E-PL1 is the third iteration of Olympus' popular Pen series. ...

  • The Olympus PEN E-PL1 is a decent interchangeable lens camera that’s capable of taking clear and vibrant pictures; its art modes are also a lot of fun. However, it really does need a built-in electronic viewfinder (EVF), or at least a bundle that incl...
