The big question is why? The concept of using the Android OS in a camera works well enough, but who needs it? Undoubtedly this camera is a fightback against the smartphone, which is devastating the low-end compact-camera business, and it has one advantag...

The image quality is good, with the exception of unpredictable auto white balance. The Android interface will be immediately familiar to anyone who uses an Android phone, so the learning curve is not steep. Setup is easy.
File transfers are slow. And according to the GPS we live 4500m under the ocean off the coast of Africa, yet when we run Maps for satnav the positioning is spoton. Weird!

Built-in Wi-Fi and GPS. A huge range of Android apps can be downloaded. Good macro performance. 120fps and 60fps stills shooting. Bright OLED touchscreen
Very poor battery life. Wi-Fi drops out intermittently. Image quality doesn't live up to expectations. No 3G/4G connectivity built-in. Optical zoom is only available in the default camera app
Nikon's Android compact camera had so much initial promise. Unfortunately, a hurried implementation means that there are a few too many kinks in the system to call it a success....
Buying Guide Best compact camera Because this is still a relatively new segment of the market, it's interesting that Nikon was the first company to bring a smart camera to the mass market, a few days ahead of the Samsung Galaxy Camera. It would have been ...
Nice multitouch screen, Versatile 10x zoom lens, WiFi and GPS, Compatible with Android apps
Slow startup, Not enough of an improvement on a smartphone camera, Picture quality drops in low light, The 16 million pixels are more about marketing than anything else here
When announcing the first Android compact camera, Nikon clearly wanted to send out a strong message about the company's forward-looking stance. However, the Coolpix S800c doesn't live up to Nikon's lofty ambitions. Smartphones are generally faster while a...
The Nikon Coolpix S800c sure does look cool. It’s a petite, curvaceous snapper whose regular size does not betray its extra smarts inside. It boots up quickly, and it’s easy to toggle between the regular camera interface you’re used to and the Android homescreen using the home button. And we’ve not got many complaints about the image quality of the sensor: its low light performance and the very ex
The Nikon Coolpix S800c runs Android, but it’s Android straight outta 2010. Version 2.3 “Gingerbread” has been with us for two full rotations around the sun now, and we’ve seen Google and its partners power ahead on to Android 4.0 and 4.x “Jelly Bean” (Which we might point out, the very similar Samsung Galaxy Camera runs) in the years since. It runs plenty of apps, but it’s ugly, somewhat confusi
The Nikon Coolpix S800c sounds like a wonderful idea on paper, but in practice, it’s a jack of all trades and a master of none. Nikon’s lack of smartphone experience really shows here: the old hardware, out of date software and lack of tight integratio...
The Nikon Coolpix S800c has the feel of a camera rushed through to be the first of its kind. It offers a glimpse of how smart cameras can revolutionise photography, which is an exciting prospect given that the technology will probably be developed further...
Responsive touchscreen, capable 10x optical zoom, better-than Smartphone pictures, browsing plus apps and sharing all possible, 1.7GB internal storage
Too expensive, battery life not good enough, slow start-up time, no manual controls
Android meets 10x optical zoom point-and-shoot camera in a smooth, easy-to-use package. But the lack of battery life, limited controls and significant price slam the brakes on this first venture. It’s good, but these are big issues not to be taken ligh...
More than just a camera; Great film recording; Good still-life performance; Large screen
Battery stamina; Price; Some slow exposures in bright conditions; Zoom noise on videos
Extremely easy to use and responsive, the Android-based Nikon Coolpix S800c feels like a camera running a mobile operating system, rather than a smart phone with a better-than-average lens and sensor. While it performed well, some rough edges in my tes...
